Finally a video to post

March 8, 2008 – 6:59 pm

After many hours of agonizing frustration trying to learn a new video editing program, on a new computer, with a totally different OS, I managed to create a video. Granted the actual project is nothing to write home about. The real prize is the fact that I got the video together in the first place.

Please leave a comment and tell me what you think.

  2. Great video! I’ve been wanting to make my own mallet, but haven’t been quite sure how to go about it. You’ve given me some ideas.

Of course, sanding the corners will take me quite a bit longer than you since I don’t have a sander, but I think I’ll chamfer the edges, chamfer again, etc. until I don’t have quite so much to do.

  3. Thanks Eric, I had fun making the mallet although I did not use it that much. My dad sent me the other one shortly after I made it. I can’t say that I recommend MDF as the material of choice. It is dense, but I don’t think that it would take much abuse.

  4. Is the more common choice solid wood with end grain being the striking surface?

  5. I would just use some kind of dense hardwood like maple. From what I have seen the actual striking surface is long grain. That is based on the carving mallet. A cabinet makers mallet uses end grain as striking surface. I would post pictures but I can’t seem to do so on the comments page. Sorry. You can go to http://www.woodcraft.com and look at their mallets to see what I mean.

  6. Hello found your site through the woodwhisperer site. I haven’t had a chance to look around to much but seems like a cool blog you have here. I posted this over at the old url than I found the new link. This setup is much better!

At first I kinda question the use of the MDF for material of choice. After thinking about it would actually be a great material but not for a round type mallet. If I remember correctly MDF is sheets of a fiberous material that is pressed under high pressure. So all its strength is on the face sides of the material. If you were to use the edge of the MDF as a hitting surface it would tend to absorb the hits more and eventually spit into layers. From the video this looks like it was allready happening.

  7. Thanks Tim,

Yea, I need to tell Marc about the new URL. I was kind of waiting until I had the top of the page the way I liked it before submitting. I think the new site will be much better once I learn how to use it.
I agree about the use of MDF as a sorry material. I was just dying to make SOMETHING and that was all I had to use. But, my dad came through in the end and made me a cool mallet anyway.
