Home Sweet (Temporary) Home

Here is my new home for the next year. I will be sharing it with a coworker and his family. I have the master bedroom so I can have some privacy and they can have theirs. My room is average size so I should be able to set up a workbench of some sort to get my wood on. The only problem I see is that we are on the second floor so me pounding away on some chisels might not be welcome. I will have to plan accordingly or just learn to keep the chisels really sharp and press down on them really hard.

There is a detached garage that is available for a pretty hefty monthly fee so there is always that option.  I will probably get that anyway when I go back to AL. to get my motorcycle and tools.

I will post more info and pictures as they become available. Right now I am still in the hotel and will continue to be here until this weekend. I can’t wait to move. Hotels suck.

  2. Hey that doesn’t look like too bad of a situation. I’ve had two workshops in apartment buildings here in Malaysia. I’ve learned two things:

    1. Just go for it with the noise during daylight hours. When someone calls in a contractor to do some work, that’s what they do, right?
    2. You can do a surprising amount of chisel work without striking a mallet.

  3. Eric,
If anyone complains, just go down with the mallet, a shiny, sharp chisel in your hand and a crazy “I just got out of the mental hospital” look on your face and tell them you’re sorry that your therapy is bothering them.

  4. Eric, I never thought about the contractor noise. I’m getting a cabinet saw now. I’ll just tell them that I am renovating the apartment.

  5. Vic,
I like the way you think. I think I can pull off the mental patient ploy.

  7. I sent you a E-Mail for a work bench.
    Check it out.

  8. I checked that out. The Skil XBench http://www.skilxbench.com/
Looks like that might do the trick as well as the Bench Horse that I was looking at. Decisions, decisions. I like that it folds up as space is an issue.

  9. Wow Dad!!
That’s is a pretty cool portable workbench.
Looks like a “Shopmate” on the ever present steroids. I forgot how much the Blum bench cost, but it seemed a bit more geared toward hand tools use. Whichever one you pick, Eric, please do a review. I’m sure there are quite a few people in similar situations as yours, for space.

  10. I like them both. Although I think I like the Blum for the fact that it is geared for hand tool use. But, you can’t argue the price point on the XBench. I am going to see if anyone has used it for hand tool use. If it is sturdy enough I will get that one and add the tail vise to it. Anyway I go I think it will be good. They both look very usable.

  11. Eric,
Thanks again for turning me onto the Blum site.
I’m in absolute love with their planes. We’ll see how long it takes to talk myself into it being OK to get one.
