WordPress Update?

May 19, 2008 – 3:37 pm

Many of you out there have your own blogs. My blog is on WordPress. Every time I log on it tells me to upgrade my blog to the new version. As a matter of fact it is staring me in the face as I write this post. Well, my website, blog, site host, ftp experience is very little and the “five minute installation” of WordPress in the beginning took me 6 hours and to be honest, I have no idea what I did. All I know is that it works now, but I have been told that I will eventually have to upgrade or I will not be able to use the program until I do.

I have the “WordPress for Dummies” book but it doesn’t really seem to help me that much. I guess that makes me a real idiot. Anyway, I need something that tells me more. I tried to upload a plugin that is supposed to automate this process but it doesn’t show up in my plugin manager. ?

I’m scared.

I don’t want to lose all my stuff.

Can somebody point me the right direction or recommend a book to help me?

Please.

HELP ME!

  2. Just do a backup (can’t remember where that is in the menu, might be “Export”) and nothing can go wrong. Heh.

I’m on the $10/year Wordpress.com hosting (which gets routed to my domain), so I think WordPress keeps that updated on their own. One advantage to that plan, anyway!

I’ve done complete Export/Import on WP before and nothing’s gone wrong. Except wait - I do remember losing photos that I had stored on my own webspace. That’s when I started Flickring everything, which is foolproof. Mostly.

  3. There is something to be said about the automatic functionality of WordPress.com. But NOOOO, I had to be a “Big Shot” and do everything myself on WordPress.org and now I am just a sniveling fool.
I’m sure everything will get ironed out in due time though.

  4. Hey Eric. Don’t sweat it man. If you need help, just email me and I will walk you through it. I know the upgrades are a pain in the butt, but they are for your own security in most cases. And until WP comes up with a better way to do auto upgrades, as blog owners, this is what we have to do. Yea it sucks. But having your website hacked would suck even more. :)

  5. Hey Marc,
I really appreciate the offer. I have been meaning to update on my off day but I seem to get busy doing something else. I’m sure I will be sending you an assistance request email in the near future.
